Verity Boone is returning to her hometown of Catawissa, PA for the first time since she was a toddler.
She knows that major changes lie ahead for her – a transition from big city life, a renewed relationship with her estranged father, and the chance to meet her betrothed, Nate, for the first time. Her hopes are incredibly high, but quickly dashed. Nate’s feelings
for her are not quite as she expected and the town is not overly welcoming to the daughter of Sarah Boone, a woman buried in a caged grave outside the cemetery walls. Verity’s discovery of her mother’s journals combined with information gathered from her family, townspeople, and the handsome doctor’s apprentice have her head spinning – and her life in danger.
Why It's Worth Reading:
This book is the perfect combination of historical fiction and mystery! My favorite thing about historical fiction is that I feel like I learn something while I'm reading the story. That was totally the case with this book, but I also felt like I was reading an amazing mystery at the same time. Verity is trying to find out the truth about her mother and why her grave has a cage covering it. She's desperate to know if Nate really loves her or is using her for her family's land. She is continually caught up with the mystery surrounding the legend of her family's wealth. And she can't help but wonder why her heart skips a beat whenever she's around Hadley, the doctor's apprentice. I was riveted to this story and could not wait to find a few minutes each day to read more!
