Jocey is overwhelmed with grief over the accidental death of her twin brother, Jack. They were always best friends, and stuck by each other through some rough times during their childhood. When Jocey receives a letter containing information that only she, Jack and their old friend, Noah, would understand, she can barely breathe. Could it mean that Jack is alive? The only way to find out is to follow the clues in the letter. She'll have to revisit her troubling past, find Noah, and return to the Seale House, the haunting, mystical foster home where she experienced the worst night of her life.
Why It's Worth Reading:
Just in time for Halloween, this spooky page-turner is book candy to read while eating some real candy. It's a gripping, creepy, adventure-filled mystery. The clues left for Jocey send her on an epic, high-stakes scavenger hunt and the reader is pulled along for the ride. Challenge yourself to solve the clues along with Jocey and Noah, or simply sit back and devour each revelation as they discover it. While this book is mostly a chilling but fun read, Myers does an admirable job of incorporating some legitimate emotion surrounding the complicated nature of foster care. All of the main characters were separated from their biological parents and lived in a group foster home at some point, an element of the story which offers some insightful moments between suspenseful plot points. This is a perfect quick read for a rainy fall afternoon.
