The next student book club meeting will be held after school on Monday, April 28. We will be reading and discussing The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I am secretly (not really) thrilled that the group chose this title because it is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES! Be sure to stop by and chat with us - there will be snacks!

Our art teachers (Mrs. Harvey, Ms. Edmunds & Mrs. Harbar, respectively) jumped at the chance to showcase their love for reading on one of our house-made READ posters. It's one of my favorites that I have ever made - probably because they had so many creative ideas for poses and arrangements. I should ask them to consult on all of my future READ poster endeavors!
The Plot: The small town of Roswell Station is rattled when Lottie Pratt is killed and Judith Finch goes missing. When Judith returns, mostly unharmed, but unable - or unwilling - to speak, they turn on her. Since she can't tell them what happened to her, former friends, neighbors, even her own mother, no longer trust her. The one connection she hopes to preserve is with Lucas Whiting, her childhood pal with whom she has fallen in love. But the mystery of Judith's disappearance is linked to Lucas in a way that he would never believe and she can never explain. Can she find a way to express to Lucas the truth about his past that only she understands? Why It's Worth Reading: This is one of the best books I've read so far this year! I was desperate to know about what happened to Judith and could not put the book down! The story takes place in a very small town in an unspecified historic time, but it could easily have happened in a modern time and place. Relationships with people, complicated communication, and the paralyzing nature of fear are the same complex issues that they have always been. Judith's quiet love for Lucas is bittersweet and very compelling. Side characters, like her brother, Darrel, and her one friend, Maria, give the otherwise dark story moments of hope. I just could not get enough of this book! Book Details: ISBN: 9781460701096 Format: eBook Publisher: Harper Collins Publication Date: October 1, 2013 Source: library Awards/Lists: YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults, 2014 SLJ Best Books 2013 Did you know Mrs. Catrine is a big reader? It's true! She's in the Staff Book Club and reads a ton in her limited free time. She's also a huge Harry Potter fan - she's got her own wand!
Thanks for volunteering to be on our first new READ poster for 2014, Mrs. Catrine! |
