The Richardson house is on fire. Elena Richardson woke to find her house filled with smoke, her children's beds empty except for a fire burning in the center of each one. Who has set these fires in the Richardson home, and for what reason? It may have something to do with Mia and Pearl, recently evicted tenants of the Richardson's apartment. Perhaps it has something to do with the scandal that has just divided their well-meaning town of Shaker Heights in half. Maybe the fire connects to one of the secrets that the members of the Richardson family are hiding from each other. Whatever the reason for the fires, the Richardson family will never be the same.
Why It's Worth Reading:
I am such a fan of Celeste Ng. Her novels have a high mystery air of suspense yet the beautiful writing and incredible character study places them firmly on the literary fiction shelf. Still, it's highly readable, nothing-snooty-about-it literary fiction. In each of her novels, nearly every character has reminded me of someone I have known. There is a truth to each person that you meet in Little Fires Everywhere that makes you believe that this story could have taken place yesterday in your town just as easily as in Shaker Heights in the mid 90s. This is technically adult fiction, but with five teenage main characters, it's perfect for high school students. Ng's last novel, Everything I Never Told You, was an Alex Award winner, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this title on that list in January. Grab this one this weekend - you'll be done by Monday!
